WARNINGS-Dramatics, I pared it down but sooooo much TL;DR, stereotypically edgy ghost stuff, death, suicide, murder, terrorism, infant death. So many gothic horror tropes that it's embarrassing. Sorry, mods.

Character Name: Evelyn Victoria Ravencroft. However, she doesn't remember her name and simply goes by Matron now.
Character Age: 40 at death.
Canon: Original canon.
Canon Point: Soon after killing the people who came to demolish the old orphanage.
World Description:

The world that Evelyn Ravencroft was born in is best described as an alternate reality to our own world. Most of the events took place exactly as expected. Technology and civilization progressed without any oddities and the world and it's people knew nothing of the threat they were about to face. That is until January first of the year 2000. The world didn't end in that moment, but it certainly ended as people knew it. And nothing would ever be the same again.

When the strike of midnight first hit, the world shifted violently and the veil that separated the supernatural and the natural world lifted and humans were exposed to the paranormal for the first time. This was referred to as the Great Shift. And in one night, the population of the world was more than cut in half, due to the surge of insanity caused by groups of humans changing into monsters and other groups learning dark magics. The magic being responsible for most of the deaths, although the newly changed monsters took the bulk of the blame for it. The landscape changed. Technology became difficult to use. Crime took on a whole new level of cruelty. Everything shifted.

Such a change in what was known made it impossible to keep going in the way the world had been. It was impossible to control a population with easily seen corruption when they could suddenly fight back. It was hard to have normal humans police those with amazing powers. And being fair to all was another issue entirely. So the world had to change in every sense to keep well and alive.

Humans as a whole remained the same, save from those who shifted to balance out the monstrous humanoid population, but the ability to learn magic became possible in all humans that stayed in their base forms. Some humans became immediately aware of their abilities, and could use magic instantaneously. These humans of unnatural power became known as Warlocks. These Warlocks were responsible for most of the deaths that happened on New Years day, the struggle of their new powers ripping through them causing them to temporarily lose their minds.

The Monster population consisted of many creatures, each cultural group having monsters that reflected their beliefs and history. America became even more diverse than expected, due to the immigration that shaped the lands.

While the buildings and technology overall looked much like one would expect from a modern world setting, energy became magic based and the Warlocks were expected to serve by helping fuel and run the lands they lived in. If it can be done today, be it using a cellular, taking a train, going to a hospital, all became based in magic rather than traditional technology. Magic pools, areas of the earth that radiate magic power and energy, became harnessed by the magic users to help compensate for the needs of an exponentially more diverse population.

Naturally, this meant many industries went defunct. Wealth was harder to accumulate, and the people harder to control. So eventually the government systems changed too. Most countries ended up ruled by monarchies, and under those monarchies a council of elders. These councils are composed of men and women from every major group in an area to ensure that all are accounted for and protected. And under that council, all groups are chosen by draft in accordance to their abilities. Police, military, doctors, caretakers, all of these are chosen by scores and abilities. Marriages could be arranged to encourage better breeding of magic abilities. And there is no choice at all to be had if you come across as valuable to your king (or queen) and country.

Freedom is more perceived than experienced. Individual freedoms are limited in the name of the protection of all. While people are healthier and more comfortable as a whole than they had been before, the undertone of fear still rings through. No one can ensure good intentions. And no amount of punishment can stamp out cruelty. And the different councils struggle with their people and their royals to keep control and peace. Corruption is crushed quickly, but no one can keep everyone safe from darkness. So the difficulties in balancing out powers, magic, and the preservation of history and life remain a constant force.

History: I AM SO SORRY. I've tried to cut this down. But the TL;DR remains.

Matron, first known as Evelyn Victoria Watson, was born sometime in the 1980s in the United Kingdom. The area specifically she doesn't remember, and she's not sure that she cares to. She was a child of the upper class society groups, if pressed she might be able to remember that her father worked with the banks and her mother had money from family. She had no siblings, and didn't have a good relationship with her family at all. And they immigrated to North America sometime in the 1990s, where they lived in New York until the Great Shift occurred.

When the Great Shift happened her family survived with minimal issue. While Evelyn was quickly marked as a Warlock, she suffered no negative attention due to the usefulness of her manifestation abilities. Nor did she struggle with the same insanity that manner suffered when they gained their magics. And she was quickly pulled from public life to serve the American monarchy and their council with her powers. Being able to manifest reality from her memories allowed the king a great amount of wealth and control. She was able to create anything he asked for, if she'd seen it at least once. And this continued on until she fell in love with Edward Ravencroft, who also served in the council courts.

While their love flourished, it flourished in secret. The king did not approve of his servants having their own lives, especially ones that were so lucrative. Edward was considered far lower class than Evelyn in the eyes of the court, as his abilities were not so intense and unique. So their relationship was not allowed publicly. This did not keep them from marrying, and conceiving a child together. They hid this from the king, using Edward's ability to shift perception. And they almost succeeded in having a very happy double life.

Almost being the key word, unfortunately. Towards the end of her pregnancy the council discovered their marriage through a psychic serving the king. And the couple were given a choice, either the child or Edward would die. That was the punishment for their great indiscretion, for daring to think that they had the right to things like freedom and love.

Evelyn's life was never at risk. She was too valuable for that.

Edward quickly made his choice, and was executed by burning to death by magic fire on the next Saturday. The stress of his death and having to continue serving a man so cruel was too much. Evelyn's health started to fail. And her child did not survive birth. This was the catalyst for Evelyn's rebellion. She manifested a bomb into the court, and set it off while she fled to the countryside. Most of the council died that day, the king among them. And with them many innocent servants. The weight of this sits heavily on her to this day.

Suicide seemed the only way to make things right to her. She made her way to the roof of an abandoned church in the woods, and threw herself from the top. However, death did not end her. She became a powerful ghost, memories fractured and abilities shifted. While still intact, her powers were erratic and she couldn't think of anything but her child. But what child was it? Where had she left it? Did she have a baby at all? This is what started her second existence as Matron, the woman in white of the woods who stole stray and unwanted children and raised them to adulthood in the old church in the woods

And over time, some of her memories returned, but nothing changed her goal of mothering every child without a good mother. And until the council sent a group to tear down the old building to make room for new territory for the king, she did well with her goal and was a kind and capable parent.

As a ghost, there was always struggles with her sanity. And that wild will manifested hard the day the children were seized and the place set to be destroyed. She rushed out, manifesting swords and knives to kill the invaders with. While the children were saved from being taken, for the first time they'd seen Matron for what she truly was. And they were traumatized by this and the deaths they had witnessed.

Personality:

Matron is a quiet, elegant woman who is in control of her actions most of the time. She's warm and pleasant, in a soft sort of way. While she does have a sense of humor, she's more likely to smile than laugh. She's easily amused, but doesn't show it often. She's just more reserved than most, although not in a cold way.

She's nervous and frets often. She worries about making good first impressions, and if people will judge her for her choices. This set of traits continued into the afterlife, and too much fussing and fretting can cause her to go into her haunted form.

She doesn't interact with adults as well as she does children. While she's absolutely happy to allow children to do what they want within reason, be it climbing all over her or wiping dirty hands on her dress, she will rarely allow adults to touch her at all. She can be very patient with the young, while quietly snappy with adults.

She'll stay in a more incorporeal form rather than solidify herself for adults as well. She just doesn't trust them, and doesn't enjoy them at first. While she'll warm up, and be helpful, there will often be an inner distrust and quiet bitterness.

However, she's a ghost. And not a normal ghost either. She's a powerful specter who struggles with rage and fear. And if the right situations present herself, she flies into a fit and can't be reasoned with by anyone over a certain age. And she tends to be incredibly violent and more than willing to cause pain to others when she's in her haunting mode.

Inventory:

Matron will come in her manifested clothes, a white gown. That's all!

Abilities:

Matron's abilities are overall that of the stereotypical ghost of legends and stories with a few twists thrown in.

-Manifestation magic.

As in her life, Matron still holds the ability to manifest things through a mix of magic and memory. While she doesn't have to have seen the items in person to create them, she still needs to have at least seen a picture. If the picture isn't a photograph, she might not be able to manifest it correctly. And if her memory isn't perfect about the item, it might come out wrong as well.

She cannot create life, living items, or one of a kind items. These things are beyond her reach. She could create components to make these sorts of things, but she has no patience or talent for crafting unless it's domestic and someone else would have to do the work for her.

If she is tired, weakened, or in her woman in white form, manifestation can become erratic or impossible until rest is had.

-Incorporeal to corporeal shift.

Matron is a ghost, and as a ghost she doesn't have a traditionally tangible form. But the remaining power from her life allows her to shift into a false form, a more solid version of herself. Making herself truly corporeal is exhausting, and cannot be sustained for long periods of time. But with her more physical form, she can do things that almost any other human can do. And she mainly uses it to hold small children and soothe upset babies.

-Energy absorption.

As a ghost, Matron can absorb energy from multiple source types to help with magic, healing, and keeping a corporeal form. Without enough energy, her form becomes difficult to keep. And she might even lose the ability to be heard or seen or hold items without technological intervention.

-Ghost traits.

As a ghost, Matron can interact with items without touching them. She can also teleport short distances, become invisible for short times, and move through solid substances. You know, ghost stuff.

Matron also speaks Spanish, English, and French. She's also a skilled homemaker and cook, having over fifty years of experience raising children.

Flaws:

Matron has a good heart, but is an unsafe and unhealthy creature. Even as a human, instead of mourning normally she let her pain cloud her judgement and she killed many people instead of the one she had intended to take out. She tends to be impulsive and judgmental, and her anxiety and fearfulness lead to violent overreactions. And death has pushed her further in her wild emotions, leaving her more willing to strike first and think afterwards. Still, she's sweet and maternal. Although that maternal heart is tainted with the willingness to murder anyone who does harm to the sweet children she raises.

Basically, mama has no chill.
